GVMC Commissioner calls people to Swachh Survekshan-2018

Visakhapatnam: Commissioner of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) M Hari Narayanan appealed the citizens to participate in Swachh Survekshan-2018. 


Addressing a media conference here on Friday, Harinarayanan appealed the people in the city to give their feedback by calling 1969. Writer and veteran actor Gollapudi Maruthi Rao has been selected as the Brand Ambassador of Swachh Bharat Mission to the city, the Commissioner added.  


Explaining about Solid Waste Management, the Commissioner said segregation of wet and dry waste was going on at a snail’s pace, however, he said that handling of 160 tonnes would be increased to 400 tonnes in 2018. 


Revealing about the revenue collections, the civic chief said that Rs 170 crore was collected from property taxes during 2017 against Rs 150 crore in 2016. The tax payers can pay their dues without penalty till December 31, he added.


On infrastructure development in 149 municipal schools, he said that toilets construction and maintenance works would be done next summer as per the government directive. The government is planning to supply benches to ensure comfort to all the students in the schools.


An action plan has been drafted to conserve water reserves in the corporation limits. There are some water bodies in 32 gram panchayats which were merged in the GVMC. On a priority basis, all the water bodies and tanks in the said areas have been protected, the Commissioner said.


On Smart City development, the Commissioner said that digital classes were introduced in 27 high schools and three primary schools in the city. The prestigious Command Control Project would be completed by end of February 2018, Hari Narayanan added. The Commissioner also said that Rs 70 crore was sanctioned for the footpath, roads and drains construction at Zone I and Zone VI.
